Getting Started Introduction

Start With the Side Cart

CartLane is a WooCommerce revenue toolkit built around a fast first result: enable the Side Cart, verify it on the storefront, then add checkout improvements, offers, recovery, pricing, funnels, and analytics as your store needs them.

First Storefront Result

Use the shortest path to prove CartLane is working before configuring advanced modules.

  1. 01
    Install and activate CartLane Free

Install from WordPress.org or Plugins -> Add New, then open CartLane in wp-admin.

  2. 02
    Enable Side Cart

Open Side Cart settings, keep the default drawer enabled, and save any store-specific visibility or layout choices.

  3. 03
    Test a published product

Open the storefront, add a real product, and confirm the Side Cart opens with quantities, totals, and checkout action.

  4. 04
Expand only after the test passes

Configure Checkout, Order Bumps, recovery, Smart Offers, Pricing, Funnels, or Pro features one workflow at a time.

No CartLane SaaS account required for Free

CartLane Free runs inside WordPress and WooCommerce. Recovery email delivery still depends on your WordPress mail setup; use a reliable SMTP or transactional mail provider when your store needs dependable email delivery.

Getting Started Installation

Installation

Install CartLane Free first. CartLane Pro 1.1.0 is a commercial extension and requires CartLane Free 1.1.8 or newer to remain installed and active.

Install CartLane Free

The recommended installation path is the WordPress plugin installer.

  • Go to Plugins -> Add New in WordPress.
  • Search for CartLane, install it, and activate it.
  • Confirm WooCommerce is active and open CartLane -> Dashboard.

Install CartLane Pro Pro 1.1.0

Upload the licensed CartLane Pro ZIP from Plugins -> Add Plugin -> Upload Plugin. Pro must run alongside CartLane Free 1.1.8 or newer.

  1. Keep CartLane Free active; Pro extends the Free runtime instead of replacing it.
  2. Activate the commercial license through the License & Updates experience included with the licensed Pro build.
  3. If the dependency check reports an older Free version, update CartLane Free before using Pro modules.

Optional WP-CLI

bash
wp plugin install cartlane --activate
wp plugin install ./cartlane-pro.zip --activate

Verify the Store

Before changing advanced settings, confirm the core environment.

  • WooCommerce is active and the CartLane Dashboard loads.
  • Side Cart opens on a public product or shop page after add-to-cart.
  • If Pro is installed, no dependency warning is shown and licensed Pro routes unlock only after valid entitlement.
Getting Started Dashboard

Revenue Overview Dashboard

Use Dashboard as a compact revenue command center. CartLane 1.1.8 combines verified KPIs, trend context, an Action Center, Recent Orders, activation progress, and recovery health without duplicating the deeper Analytics workspaces.

Daily workspace Revenue Overview
Free
Focus Revenue + orders Verified store signals, not vanity metrics.
Actions Prioritized Recovery and order attention appear as compact work items.
Recent activity Orders Open a focused order drawer from recent activity.

Action Center

Use Action Center to review meaningful setup, recovery, or store-operation items. It is intentionally concise; module-specific configuration still belongs on the dedicated module page.

Recent Orders

The Dashboard shows a compact recent-order view. Open Orders for full queues, search, filters, payment confirmation, and fulfilment actions.

Getting Started Orders

Orders Workspace

CartLane Orders is an operational inbox for high-frequency order work. It complements WooCommerce Orders instead of trying to replace the full WooCommerce order editor.

Operational workspace Orders
Free
Views 4 queues All, Needs action, Processing, and Completed.
Search Built in Search orders and filter by status, payment, date, or total.

Daily operation

Review an Order

The right-side drawer keeps context while exposing only safe CartLane actions.

  1. 01
    Open a queue

Use Needs action for orders that require attention, or search/filter the full order list.

  2. 02
    Open the order drawer

Review customer, items, totals, payment state, shipping summary, and order activity without leaving CartLane.

  3. 03
    Run the supported action

For eligible offline-payment orders, confirm payment and move the order to processing; for processing orders, mark fulfilment complete.

  4. 04
    Use WooCommerce for deep editing

Refunds, manual line-item edits, tax edits, downloads, and other full order-editor tasks stay in WooCommerce.

HPOS-safe order handling

CartLane reads and updates orders through WooCommerce order APIs and capability checks. Actions require the appropriate shop-order permissions.

Getting Started Settings

Settings

Manage CartLane admin appearance, core module state, data-retention behavior, connected workflow readiness, and support/system controls from the Settings workspace.

Core Modules

Use Settings for broad module state, then use each module page for detailed storefront behavior. Avoid enabling several new revenue workflows at once; test each one on the storefront before moving on.

Data & Support

The lifecycle controls make uninstall behavior explicit. Support and system information help diagnose environment or compatibility issues without exposing secrets in normal UI.

Store Experience Side Cart

AJAX Side Cart

The Side Cart is CartLane's first-value storefront feature: a fast WooCommerce cart drawer with quantity changes, totals, checkout access, free-shipping progress, coupon support, and a bounded Free Smart Offer placement.

Core Behavior

Side Cart uses WooCommerce cart state as the source of truth. Cart and checkout/account exclusions remain protected where the drawer should not replace WooCommerce core flows.

Acceptance test

Test the Side Cart

Verify the visible storefront result before configuring advanced modules.

  1. 01
    Open a published product

Use a normal storefront session rather than an admin preview only.

  2. 02
    Add the product

Confirm the drawer opens and shows the correct product, quantity, subtotal, and checkout action.

  3. 03
    Change quantity and coupon

Verify cart totals update and an invalid coupon fails safely without breaking the drawer.

  4. 04
    Check mobile

Confirm the drawer remains readable, keyboard accessible, and usable on a narrow viewport.

Store Experience Checkout

Checkout

CartLane enhances WooCommerce checkout with trust and urgency controls, low-stock messaging, field controls, visual presets, abandoned-cart contact capture, and Order Bumps. CartLane 1.1.8 also supports WooCommerce Cart & Checkout Blocks.

Checkout Blocks

CartLane declares Cart & Checkout Blocks compatibility and registers its checkout extension through WooCommerce Blocks. Order Bump add/remove operations use Store API-backed cart updates so totals stay synchronized.

Free Limits

CartLane Free guarantees a baseline of two active Order Bumps. A valid Pro entitlement can remove that quota; inactive or invalid extensions cannot reduce or elevate the Free contract.

Launch Checklist

Validate the offer on the real checkout before relying on revenue tracking.

  • The selected product is purchasable and the bump is active.
  • The bump appears only when its eligibility rules match.
  • Accepting or removing the bump updates the WooCommerce cart and totals.
  • Mobile and keyboard behavior remain usable with the active checkout template.
Store Experience Smart Offers

Smart Offers

CartLane Free includes one active Side Cart Smart Offer with manual product selection and simple cart targeting. CartLane Pro extends the same campaign model with more placements, scoring, frequently bought together, checkout add-ons, recipes, and advanced targeting.

Smart Offers Access

Free is intentionally bounded but fully usable for one Side Cart campaign.

Area Free Pro
Active campaigns 1 Unlimited when licensed
Manual products + Side Cart placement Included Included
Simple cart targeting Included Included
Multiple placements / scoring / FBT Locked Included
Checkout add-ons / recipes / advanced targeting Locked Included

Measure Results

CartLane records Smart Offer impressions, acceptance, and attributed revenue through the shared analytics foundation. Avoid judging a campaign from a single session; use the Analytics and Pro intelligence views when enough data exists.

Revenue Abandoned Cart Recovery

Abandoned Cart Recovery

Capture recoverable carts, schedule recovery messages, issue secure restore links, preview and test email content, and attribute recovered orders. Pro adds advanced recovery campaigns, targeting, coupons, order-recovery workflows, and deeper analytics.

Recovery lifecycle

Recover a Cart

CartLane keeps recovery bounded to shoppers who provide recoverable contact data and respects suppression and purchase state.

  1. 01
    Capture a recoverable cart

CartLane records eligible cart/contact state from supported storefront and checkout flows.

  2. 02
    Run the recovery sequence

Enabled recovery steps are scheduled, retried safely when appropriate, and cancelled when the cart should no longer be contacted.

  3. 03
    Restore with a secure link

Recovery links use bounded tokens and restore policy checks before rebuilding the cart state.

  4. 04
    Attribute the paid order

Recovered revenue is recorded only when the resulting WooCommerce order reaches an authoritative paid state.

Email delivery depends on WordPress mail

CartLane can prepare, preview, test, and schedule recovery email, but final delivery depends on your WordPress mail environment. For production stores, use a reliable SMTP or transactional mail provider and test delivery before launch.

Free vs Pro Recovery

Free owns core abandoned-cart recovery; Pro extends the same privacy and lifecycle boundaries.

Area Free Pro
Abandoned-cart capture + secure restore Included Included
Preview / test / resend controls Included Included
Advanced campaign targeting and coupon provider Core sequence Included
Failed-order / pending-payment recovery Not included Included where supported
Revenue Dynamic Pricing

Dynamic Pricing

Create a bounded discount rule in Free, then use Pro for advanced merchandising logic. Free supports one active percentage, fixed, or basic BOGO rule with product/category scope and simple quantity/subtotal conditions.

Cart Discount RuleFree example - one active rule
Percentage
Condition:Cart subtotal >= $100

Pricing Access

Advanced BOGO / targeting / intelligence Locked Included

Runtime Safety

Pricing rules run through the CartLane pricing contract and WooCommerce cart pricing flow. Test the exact product, category, coupon, tax, and quantity combinations used by your store before publishing a new rule.

Revenue Funnels

Funnels

CartLane Free includes one active linear funnel with up to two executable steps and the shared funnel runtime. Pro removes the active limit and unlocks deeper steps, branching, targeting, multi-offer sequences, and advanced analytics.

Area Free Pro

Activation Safety

A funnel should not be activated until its required steps and destinations are valid. Test the shopper path before enabling it on production traffic.

Revenue Analytics

Analytics

CartLane Analytics separates summary reporting from deeper investigation. Free includes revenue, conversion, recovery, offer, event, and dashboard foundations; Pro adds extended history, intelligence, forecasting, segments, timelines, event investigation, export, and offer intelligence.

Sample report Revenue Overview

Data Integrity

Revenue reporting is tied to authoritative WooCommerce order states and CartLane attribution evidence. Missing or partial historical coverage should be treated as coverage gaps rather than estimated facts.

Pro Upsells Pro Only

Post-Purchase Upsells

CartLane Pro adds post-purchase upsell and downsell offers with session safety, gateway readiness checks, offer reporting, previews, and protected accept/decline operations.

Gateway Readiness

Do not assume every payment gateway can perform a post-purchase charge. CartLane exposes readiness and adapter boundaries; the module must fail safely when the gateway or order is not eligible.

Pro A/B Testing Pro Only

Upsell A/B Testing

CartLane Pro A/B testing is tied to supported upsell experiment targets. Create controlled variants, run or pause the experiment, inspect supported testable elements, and declare a winner after sufficient evidence.

4.2%Upsell Variant ASample conversion rate
VS
Sample7.8%Upsell Variant BWait for enough evidence before declaring a winner

Experiment Scope

A/B Testing is not a generic visual-site experiment framework. Use the testable-elements endpoint and Pro UI to select the supported CartLane upsell target for the current release.

Experiment workflow

Run an Upsell Test

Keep one question per experiment and avoid calling a winner from a tiny sample.

  1. 01
    Choose a supported upsell target

Use a testable element returned by CartLane Pro rather than an arbitrary selector.

  2. 02
Create variants and run the test

Keep variants meaningfully different while preserving the same eligibility and gateway context.

  3. 03
    Review evidence

Use conversion and revenue evidence after enough observations have accumulated.

  4. 04
    Declare the winner

Use the Pro winner action only when the experiment has enough evidence for your store decision.

Pro Integrations

Integrations

CartLane Free provides read-only compatibility and readiness guidance. CartLane Pro adds credential-backed provider configuration, adapter readiness operations, and integration tests where the licensed module supports them.

Integration Access

The Free screen helps you understand the environment without pretending a provider is connected.

Area Free Pro
Compatibility/readiness view Read-only Read + operate
Save provider configuration Not available Included for supported providers
Gateway adapter readiness checks Read-only guidance Operational checks
Credential-backed actions Not available Included where supported

Secrets

Never paste production credentials into support messages or documentation screenshots. Use the CartLane Pro integration UI so secrets are handled through the intended protected configuration path.

Pro Payment Gateways

Payment Gateways

Use gateway readiness as an eligibility check for post-purchase operations, not as a promise that every WooCommerce payment gateway supports one-click charges. CartLane Pro must have a supported adapter, eligible order context, and valid payment state before attempting an operation.

Readiness

Gateway readiness combines store configuration, adapter availability, and order context. A configured payment method is not automatically a reusable post-purchase payment source.

Post-purchase safety

Validate a Gateway

Use a real test environment before offering one-click post-purchase actions.

  1. 01
Confirm the payment gateway is active

Verify the gateway is configured and working for normal WooCommerce checkout first.

  2. 02
    Run CartLane Pro readiness

Check adapter readiness globally and, where available, for the specific order context.

  3. 03
    Run a sandbox/test payment

Confirm the gateway adapter can perform the intended operation without double charging or bypassing WooCommerce order state.

  4. 04
    Fail closed

If readiness is unavailable or the operation fails, CartLane should preserve the original order and avoid pretending the upsell succeeded.

Developers REST API

REST API Reference

CartLane exposes authenticated WordPress REST routes for its admin workspaces and bounded storefront operations. Treat this page as a route-family guide: always use the permissions, nonces, validation, and capability checks implemented by the current plugin version.

Authentication

Admin routes require WordPress authentication, the expected REST nonce, and CartLane/WooCommerce capabilities. Storefront cart routes use CartLane's cart-ownership and nonce/session protections. Do not disable permission callbacks for custom integrations.

Route contracts can evolve

For custom development, verify the route registration in the exact CartLane Free/Pro version you deploy. Do not rely on removed legacy license endpoints or undocumented response fields.

Developers Hooks & Filters

PHP Hooks & Filters

Use CartLane hooks to extend supported behavior without bypassing entitlement, sanitization, order-state, privacy, or storefront safety checks.

Feature capability filters

Extensions can participate in the shared feature contract, but Pro elevation must still be backed by valid entitlement.

php
add_filter( 'cartlane_feature_capability', function ( $allowed, $feature, $capability ) {
    return $allowed;
}, 10, 3 );

Stable Extension Points

Current source includes hooks such as cartlane_feature_active_limit, cartlane_feature_capability, cartlane_side_cart_recommendations, cartlane_blocks_checkout_trust_badges, cartlane_recovery_minimum_retention_days, cartlane_analytics_retention_days, cartlane_recovery_event, and cartlane_revenue_configuration_changed.

Do not bypass entitlement

Do not use filters to unlock Pro-only capabilities or mutate quotas on an unlicensed installation. CartLane Free intentionally prevents inactive or invalid extensions from silently elevating access.

Developers HPOS & Checkout Blocks

HPOS & Checkout Blocks

CartLane Free 1.1.8 and CartLane Pro 1.1.0 declare compatibility with WooCommerce High-Performance Order Storage and Cart & Checkout Blocks. Compatibility still depends on the exact WooCommerce, theme, gateway, and extension combination running on your store.

HPOS

CartLane declares custom_order_tables compatibility and uses WooCommerce order APIs for the Orders workspace and revenue workflows. Avoid direct custom-order SQL in custom extensions when WooCommerce APIs are available.

Checkout Blocks

CartLane declares cart_checkout_blocks compatibility. Free checkout enhancements and Order Bumps register through the Checkout Blocks extension, while Pro Checkout Add-ons extend the same Store API transport instead of creating a second cart protocol.

Regression Test

After changing WooCommerce storage or checkout mode, verify the exact storefront and order workflow.

  • Add to cart and Side Cart updates work.
  • Classic checkout or Checkout Blocks renders configured CartLane enhancements.
  • Order Bump add/remove updates totals correctly.
  • Cart capture and recovery contact flow still works.
  • Orders workspace reads and updates eligible orders without storage-mode errors.
Resources FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for the current CartLane Free 1.1.8 and CartLane Pro 1.1.0 product model.

What is included in CartLane Free?

Free includes the Side Cart, Checkout foundation, up to 2 active Order Bumps, abandoned-cart recovery, Analytics, Orders, Settings, 1 active Side Cart Smart Offer, 1 active basic Pricing rule, and 1 active linear Funnel with up to 2 executable steps.

Does CartLane Free require a SaaS account?

No CartLane SaaS account is required for the Free plugin. Recovery email still uses your WordPress mail environment, so a reliable SMTP or transactional email provider may be needed for production delivery.

Does Pro replace the Free plugin?

No. CartLane Pro 1.1.0 extends CartLane Free and requires CartLane Free 1.1.8 or newer to stay installed and active.

Does CartLane support Checkout Blocks and HPOS?

Current Free and Pro releases declare compatibility with WooCommerce Cart & Checkout Blocks and HPOS. Always test your exact theme, gateway, and extension stack before a production rollout.

Why is a feature visible but limited in Free?

Smart Offers, Pricing, Funnels, and Order Bumps use a limited Free contract. The same screen remains usable in Free with bounded active quotas; Pro extends capabilities and can remove the active quota after valid entitlement.

Resources Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Use this checklist for the most common CartLane storefront, recovery, quota, and Pro-extension issues.

Side Cart does not open

  • Confirm Side Cart is enabled and the current page matches the configured visibility rules.
  • Test a published purchasable product and confirm WooCommerce add-to-cart itself succeeds.
  • Temporarily bypass aggressive page/cart caching and re-test the AJAX request.
  • Check the browser console/network panel for blocked CartLane assets or REST/AJAX responses.

Checkout or Order Bump is missing

  • Confirm the bump is active and the Free active quota has not been reached.
  • Verify the selected product is purchasable and eligibility rules match the current cart.
  • For Checkout Blocks, confirm WooCommerce Blocks assets are loading and the CartLane checkout extension is present.
  • If using a Pro-only template or timer, confirm valid Pro entitlement.

Recovery email is not delivered

  • Use Preview and Send a test to confirm the CartLane message can be generated.
  • Check WordPress mail/SMTP logs; CartLane cannot guarantee delivery when wp_mail is not reliably configured.
  • Confirm the shopper is not suppressed, the cart is still eligible, and the recovery schedule has not been cancelled by purchase or privacy state.

Pro feature stays locked

  • Confirm CartLane Free is active and is version 1.1.8 or newer.
  • Confirm the licensed Pro build is active and the commercial entitlement/update integration reports valid access.
  • Do not add legacy CartLane license endpoints or feature filters as a workaround.
Resources License & Updates

License & Updates

CartLane Free updates through WordPress.org. CartLane Pro is built as a clean commercial extension; licensing, entitlement verification, and update delivery are applied by the external licensed-distribution integration rather than a legacy CartLane-owned licensing client.

CartLane Free

Update CartLane Free through the normal WordPress plugin update workflow. Keep Free current before installing or updating CartLane Pro because Pro depends on the shared Free runtime.

CartLane Pro Commercial

Use the License & Updates experience included with the licensed CartLane Pro distribution. The clean Pro source intentionally contains no product-owned licensing client or update-delivery implementation.

No legacy CartLane license API

Current documentation and integrations should not call removed CartLane-owned license REST routes. Entitlement must come from the licensed commercial integration and the runtime cartlane_is_pro bridge.

Resources Support

Support

Choose the support channel that matches the product build you use, and include enough environment detail to reproduce the issue without sharing private credentials.

Free Support

For CartLane Free, use the WordPress.org support channel and include the CartLane version, WooCommerce version, WordPress version, checkout type, and clear reproduction steps.

Pro Support

For CartLane Pro, use the commercial support channel linked from your purchase/distribution account. Include CartLane Free and Pro versions plus the affected module and gateway/integration when relevant.

What to Include

A focused report is faster to diagnose.

  • CartLane Free and Pro versions.
  • WordPress and WooCommerce versions.
  • Classic checkout or Checkout Blocks.
  • Exact steps, expected result, and actual result.
  • Relevant console/network or PHP error text with customer data and secrets removed.

Never share secrets

Do not send license secrets, API keys, payment credentials, recovery tokens, customer personal data, or database dumps unless an official support workflow explicitly requests a sanitized artifact.
